Amanda Talks Fashion: 10 Tips to Staying Chic when the Weather turns Chilly

Once again, our style editor Amanda has totally outdone herself! Keep reading for her amazing tips to staying fashionable during the coldest months of the year...

When you’re getting dressed to brave winter’s below-freezing temperatures, sometimes it can seem like a mad dash to put on the entire contents of your closet for the sake of surviving the arctic-like conditions (that’s been me this month). But when your destination is somewhere that you need to look put together, like the office, a swanky event or a rendezvous with your sweetie, the one-of-all approach just doesn’t fly. So what’s a girl to do? I’ve scoured the web and pulled 10 of my favorite examples of what to wear when the temperature drops, so you (and I!) will look chic even when it’s chilly.

1. Pile on shades of the same color. Blue’s your favorite hue? Got a thing for green garments? Put it all together. As long as it’s a variation of the same color, it will go.

2. Bring heels out of hibernation. Boots keep your tootsies toasty, but so can stilettos! Add tights and you’ll have a layer of warmth that rivals your riding boots.

3. Slip into a skirt. A long skirt maximizes your layering options, allowing you to add thermals, heavy tights, and thick wool socks beneath without creating bulk.

4. Show off your gloves. Tuck long gloves into a three-quarter sleeve jacket for a touch of glamour that won’t let Jack Frost in.

5. Liven up your layers. Thermal tees and camisoles are not the only tops that will keep the heat in. Go for an unexpected grouping that utilizes blouses, knits and beyond.

6. Trade tights for over-the-knee socks. When the temperature is too cold to go sans stockings but tights seem too heavy, meet in the middle with soaring socks. Bonus: there’s finally a use for those knee-highs left over from your high school uniform.

7. Bring on the baubles. While they won’t keep you warm, a megadose of jewels will make your winter basics shine.

8. Break out your crops. Ankle-baring pants turn cozy when tights are layered underneath.

9. Try out different scarf ties. Knots, loops, bows…with so many possibilities you’ll never be bored or cold.

10. Bundle up…but add a belt. Sometimes you just can’t get around wearing a big, puffy jacket. On those freezing days, add shape to boxy pieces with a belt cinched at the waist.

New Year + New Apartment!

Happy New Year to all of my sweet readers! Hope your holiday season was full of wonder, delight, delicious food and fun times with family and friends. After a cozy Christmas at home, I’m excited to be back to New York back to blogging, and finally in my new apartment.

It took a little while to find the perfect place, but I couldn’t be happier in my little nook overlooking the Hudson River, and I can’t wait to start decorating! Right now the walls are about as white as the snow that’s coming down outside, so it will be fun to start thinking about ways to infuse the space with pops of color.

I’ll keep you updated as I come up with ideas for the space, but for now I can’t get enough of the gorgeous green walls in Flower Films' office kitchen from domino (below)!
